September 2025 Newsletter

Friends, family, and alumni of the Boston University Sailing Team,

The past month has been packed with practices, team events, and regattas. In the past four weeks, the BUDS have completed 15 regattas across six states and twelve venues.

Season Opening:

After settling into our season, the BUDS have been working to establish our team. Our official roster for this semester is made up of 32 sailors (eight seniors, seven juniors, ten sophomores, and eight freshmen), along with two juniors who are abroad for the fall. Each practice has consisted of diverse drills and competitive races. We have also crossed over the other side of the river to join MIT, Harvard, and Northeastern for some casual racing in FJs and 420s. This past week, our team welcomed back Boston University Sailing Alum Lexi Pline to photograph our media day! As the team continues to progress through the semester, we look forward to many more eventful practices and exciting regattas.

Regatta Review:

During weekend one, we sent twenty-two of our BUDS to sail in five different regattas. The Harry Anderson Trophy was hosted at Yale, where we placed 15th out of 18 schools after six races in light, shifty conditions. Two teams were sent up to Maine Maritime to compete in two regattas. At The Penobscot Bay Open, we came in 5/10 overall and first in A fleet, racing in 420s. We also sent a big boat crew to MMA to compete in the Harman Cup, ending in 8/8 overall with high wind and 3-4 foot seas. Back on the Charles, the BUDS sailed two regattas. The Lady-BUDS were over at MIT competing at the Toni Duetsch ‘58 Trophy, coming in 17/17 after fourteen races throughout the weekend. Over at Harvard, the BUDS placed 5/9 overall with a couple of port tack starts by our A boat at the Charles Invite.

In our second weekend, we logged another three regattas in the books. Up in Maine, we had two sets of sailors at the Nicholas Barnett Trophy. With the help of assistant Coach Andrew, we placed 7th and 10th out of 15 boats overall with tricky current and 8-12 knots of breeze. On the Charles, we sailed two regattas, spending the day on and off the water, working with extremely light wind conditions. At MIT, we placed 15th out of 18 in the three-division Hatch Brown Trophy, with our A division boat placing in 10th. The BUDS also hosted the Regis Trophy at Harvard, with ‘25 Alumni Tiare coaching the Lady BUDS. After ten races between the two divisions, the BUDS ended in 17th out of 18.

During weekend three, the BUDS competed in four regattas. We sent two boats in each division at the Hood Trophy, placing 10th and 14th overall out of eighteen schools after four races. Our Women’s team was up at Dartmouth for the Mrs. Hurst Bowl. The Lady BUDS ended in 17th out of seventeen schools after two days of shifty sailing. Over at Brown, our mixed A team raced in the Sherman Hoyt Trophy, where they completed seven races over the weekend. The BUDS ended in a tie for 17th, after a weekend of testing conditions. We also had three boats competing in the Courageous Ross hosted by UNH out of Boston Harbor. We placed 6th, 9th, and 14th after seven races on Saturday.

Rounding off the first month of regattas, weekend four had four regattas, including women ACCs out of the Naval Academy. At Navy, the Lady BUDS sailed on the Severn River and Annapolis Bay, completing nine races in both fleets and placing 17/18. At MIT, the Smith Trophy sailors raced in Tech Dinghies and 420’s ending in 9th/18. At the Danmark Trophy hosted by the Coast Guard Academy, the BUDS spent a fair amount of time waiting for wind but managed to complete eleven races throughout the weekend, placing 18th out of 20 boats. Finally, at our regatta, the BU Invite, we had shifty light Charles conditions for the one-day regatta. We ended in 9th and 14th out of 17 boats after three races over the course of the day.
